Corns and Callus

Corns and calluses are normal responses by your skin to protect pressure areas from excessive friction and rubbing, much like calluses that can build up on your hands with sports or manual labor. If the callus builds up too much, it becomes painful.

Common sites for calluses include the ball of the foot, the side of the big toes, and around the heel. Remember that structural deformities affect how you walk, and high-heeled shoes can cause abnormal pressure under the ball of your foot, leading to calluses.

Corns are hard plugs of compressed callus that form over a focal pressure point like a hammer toe.

Management may involve debriding the callus, deflective padding, insoles, orthoses, and changes in footwear.

Self-care with creams and exfoliation helps a lot, as does surgery to straighten toes or remove bumps that create pressure points for callus and corn to form.

Corns on the ball of the foot can be misdiagnosed as plantar warts, so they should be properly assessed before any treatment.
