Corticosteroid injections are a beneficial adjunctive treatment that can provide fast relief for
While corticosteroids reduce swelling and inflammation, they do not address the cause, so they must be combined with other treatments. The time it takes for the corticosteroid injection to take effect varies between individuals, as does the length of time it can give relief.
Multiple research studies have reported that corticosteroid injections effectively reduce heel pain in patients with plantar fasciitis. However, the effects are usually short-term, lasting only 4-12 weeks.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it painful?
Corticosteroid injections are regarded as painful; however, we use injection techniques to reduce discomfort, and combined with local anesthesia, this will mitigate the pain.
Do you need ultrasound guidance when injecting cortisone?
In the foot, most cortisone injections do not require ultrasound guidance, as the joints or other structures we frequently inject are relatively superficial and easy to locate. However, some injections are best performed with ultrasound guidance.
Is Cortisone on its own helpful?
Generally not, as it addresses the pain and inflammation and not the cause
How long does it last?
It is difficult to give a good answer as it is variable and dependent on many factors.
Are there any complications?
Cortisone, when used appropriately, is safe; however, inappropriate use or repeated injections into the same area can cause soft tissue atrophy and tendon and ligament rupture.
