Extra Corporeal Shockwave Therapy

Extracorporeal shockwave Therapy (ESWT) is a non-invasive treatment for longstanding musculoskeletal pain. Clinical studies investigating the effects of shockwave therapy for plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendinopathy show over 70% effectiveness compared to a placebo.

Acoustic sound waves are delivered into the injured tissue via a hand-held probe. Whilst the exact mechanism of action is unclear, it has been shown to:

  • Promote healing through the formation of new blood vessels
  • Stimulate nerves to reduce sensitivity and pain
  • Breaks down calcium build-ups within tendons
  • Increase collagen production.

Extracorporeal shockwave Therapy should not be used with

  • Pregnancy
  • Open wounds
  • Joint replacements
  • Blood clotting disorders, including thrombosis
  • Infection
  • Cancerous tissue

Frequently Asked Questions

Does shockwave therapy hurt?

You may experience discomfort at the beginning of your initial treatments. This often improves throughout the session. The shockwave machine has multiple levels, meaning we can start low and gradually increase the intensity as you become used to it.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments required will depend on the presentation and response to treatment. The effects are compounding, meaning the effects are more noticeable after multiple treatments. On average, this may be four weekly treatments.
