Neuromas

A neuroma, or as it is sometimes called, “Morton’s Neuroma,” is a painful condition caused by a pinched nerve, most frequently found between the third and fourth toes. It can cause pain, a burning sensation, tingling, or numbness between the toes and the ball of the foot.

Neuromas can also occur in conjunction with damaged joints, ligaments, and other structures in the ball of the foot, such as a bursa.

Treatment involves modifying or changing shoes, metatarsal pads, or slim orthoses to separate the bones in the area. This can stop compression and nerve irritation and reduce the pain. If pain is ongoing, cortisone infiltration into the bursa or around the nerves can be helpful in providing relief.

Most neuromas can be settled without surgery. Surgery is only required when other methods have failed to give relief.
