Arch pain that occurs with activity or when you get up in the morning is often due to plantar fasciitis. This is caused by inflammation or injury to the ligament that stretches across the arch, from the heel bone to the ball of the foot. Pain can also occur in the heel.
Other causes can include acquired flat foot due to spring ligament injuries or midfoot arthritis.
Age, weight, occupation, muscle tightness and foot type all play a role in causing pain.
Treatment is varied depending on assessment and correct diagnosis. If plantar fasciitis is the cause treatment usually involves managing the pain and inflammation in combination with stretching and orthoses to address the mechanical cause.
Surgery is rarely required but can may be considered depending of the cause of your arch pain.
