Shin Pain

Shin pain, commonly called “shin splints,” is pain around the shin bone that occurs with activity. This pain may be medial tibial stress syndrome, stress fracture, or chronic exertional compartment syndrome.

Symptoms generally improve or sometimes worsen with activity, depending on the cause, and may linger for hours or days.

Risk factors:

  • Female
  • Increased waist girth
  • Flat or high arched feet
  • Large and often sudden increase in training volume
  • Previous bone stress injuries, such as a stress fracture
  • Reduced calf strength and or flexibility

Treatment options may involve footwear recommendations, orthotics, exercise prescriptions, and activity modification.
