The knee is not just a simple hinge joint and consists of the joints between the thigh and leg bone and the joint at the front of the knee between the knee cap and the thigh bone.
Pain over the front of the knee when kneeling, squatting or walking up and down stairs is commonly caused by the patella (knee cap) not gliding correctly over the front of the femur (thigh bone) for which abnormal foot pronation is a factor.
Maltracking of the patella is caused by weak quadriceps muscle, poor core stability, iliotibial band tightness as well as abnormal foot and leg function.
Treatment usually involves taping the patella, strengthening and stretching exercises, orthoses and supportive footwear.
